Alkinoos Athanasiou is a national board-certified neurosurgeon in Greece and also an individual member of European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), the Eurospine, the AOSpine and the Hellenic Neurosurgical Society, as well as of other neuroscientific societies (SAN, FENS, IBRO etc). He currently is the treasurer and a member of board of directors of Hellenic Society for Biomedical Technology. Alkinoos is currently employed as a Neurosurgeon in private practice and a Research Associate at the Lab of Medical Physics, Faculty of Medicine in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Greece. He finished his neurosurgical training at the 1st Department of Neurosurgery, "AHEPA" University General Hospital and took the board examination in Neurosurgery on December 2016. He holds clinical experience since 2008 as a scientific associate and resident in clinical departments during his neurosurgical residency training with emphasis on neurotrauma and spine operations.
He completed an MD in 2008 and an MSc in Medical Informatics in 2012 (with a thesis in brain networks) from School of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH. He also recently completed (Feb 2018) his PhD thesis on neuronal circuits of the brain after spinal cord injury. He has been awarded a “Mario Boni” Research Grant from Cervical Spine Research Society – European Section, a "Vicky Zachariou" 2016 Award from Hellenic Spine Society and a "Brihaye" 2018 EANS Research Grant for the project “CSI:Brainwave”.
He has published scientific papers in several journals of Neurosurgery and Computational Neuroscience (eg Neuroscience, BioMed Research International, Advances in Human Computer Interaction, Child’s Nervous System etc) and has presented his work in prominent conferences (eg IFMBE Medicon, IEEE CBMS), both international and local. He is a reviewer for international journals and conferences (Neuroscience, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews, Clinical Neurophysiology and others) and has served in organizing committees of several conferences.
Alkinoos is involved in teaching of several courses, such as “Bioinformatics” in MSc on Nanosciences & Nanotechnology, “Neuroscience & Neurophysiology” in MSc on Medical Research Methodology, “Medical Informatics” in grad School of Medicine, AUTH, as well as in course “Management of behavioral issues in the school environment” and the organization of an associated hands-on workshop for the students of the MA on Organization & Administration of Education, School of Pedagogical and Technological Education. Moreover he is listed as Associated Scientific Staff at School of Health Sciences, Frederick University Cyprus (educational objects: “Research Methodology” & “Information Technologies in Health Services”). He speaks Greek (native language), English (mastery) and French (working proficiency).
