Mr. Ion Beratis talks about Parkinson's Disease and predictors of driving behavior PD patients.

PD is a slowly progressive degenerative disease with motor dysfunction as its cardinal feature and its clinical picture appears to influence in a negative fashion various aspects of cognition, behaviour and, of course, driving.
Predictors of driving behavior in PD (specific neuropshychological tests) are presented before discussing drivng behavior under demanding driving conditions that involve increased cognitive load. Studies dealing with difficult conditions for PD patients and their parameters are mentioned as well as the insight they produced, including simulator experiments. Driving simulator as a neuropshychological tool in order to detect changes in the executive functioning of patients with PD during a 2-year period appeared to be a useful tool for assessing executive functions under ecologically valid conditions. Cognitive measures appear to be stronger predictors than motor measures of driving fitness in PD.
