DEEP-RAFT is an educational and outreach endeavor in four Eastern Europe countries (Greece, Georgia, Kazhakhstan, Ukraine) for patients, doctors and healthcare policy makers. It aims at raising awareness, educating and affecting systemic change on diagnosis and treatment of AF/VTE.

DEEP-RAFT innovates through a co-creative approach for educational design and an active approach to learning and awareness building.

DEEP-RAFT creates evidence based, medically valid interactive educational material in the form of virtual patients and branching educational vignettes for doctors and patients. This content drives experiential workshops and infodays at key international conferences and dates.

DEEPRAFT Content and events are created with the help of heathcare system stakeholders (Specialist doctors, patients, healthcare policy makers) custom to healthcare, cultural and technological particulars of each participating country. Active learning principles such as Scenario/Problem Based Learning facilitate hands-on doctors’ education and participatory patient awareness.

DEEPRAFT’s multilayered, iterative evaluation plan covers all levels of outcomes from activity participation to community healthcare impact ensuring DEEP-RAFT’s systemic and emergent healthcare impact through evidence based, co-creative, active learning, participatory approaches.

DEEP-RAFT is realized by a consortium of 4 academic partners led by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with overall coordinator and educational technologies lead by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Panagiotis Bamidis. The overall clinical education and outreach lead will be cardiology assis. Prof. Dr. George Giannakoulas. The consortium and its positioning ensure a wide reach across Eastearn Europe based on partners’ reach & networking (e.g. AUTH’s Medbiquitous international links and ePBLnet’s Eastern European ones).

The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) is the largest university in Greece, serving as the metropolitan University for southern Europe. AUTH leads DEEP-RAFT with the Faculty of Health Sciences (Cardiology Dept., Lab of Medical Physics). AUTH’s past projects’ portfolio includes mEducator, CHILDRENHEALTH (clinical studies on childrens’ cardiovascular diseases from obesity), and the “ePBLnet” (TEMPUS) project. AUTH is a member of MedBiquitous Learning Objects Working Group & the 1st School in Greece and SE Europe to institutionally incorporate virtual patients (vp.med.auth.gr). Beyond Project Coordination, AUTH shall be responsible for the core educational material selection, digital educational content creation, coordination of educational and outreach activities and implementation of them in Greece.

David Tvildiani Medical University (DTMU) DTMU mission is to provide scientifically-oriented Higher Medical Education based on the best International experience. Originally AIETI Medical School, DTMU is the first non-governmental highest educational Medical Institution in Georgia established in 1989. Today it represents a research institution, providing PhD programme since 2011. It is one of the leaders in Medical Education in the region, and DTMU graduates now hold leading positions both in Georgia and abroad, many of them in USA and EU. DTMU shall be responsible for all Georgian national activities, including educational content customization, outreach activities and local healthcare system insights, dissemination and impact activities.

Karaganda State Medical University (KSMU) was founded in 1950. The University has become one of leading medical education institutions in teaching and scientific research in the former USSR and the Republic of Kazakhstan. KSMU has been actively involved into the development of National Medical Curriculum and policy making in medical education and health care in Kazakhstan. Since 2005, the University has been continuously certified by National Quality Assurance UK and NQA – Russia to confirm to ISO 9001-2008 standard in its undergraduate and postgraduate medical education programmes, research, management of library and information resources. KSMU is included into World Directory of Medical Schools of the World Health Organization and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). It is an institutional member of the Association of Medical Education in Europe (AMEE), Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME), Organization of PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System (ORPHEUS), European University Association (EUA). KSMU has experience on several state and externally funded programs such as the state programme on modernization the medical education of the Ministry of Health, the WAVES Erasmus+ European network and the ePBLnet Tempus European network promoting active learning through problem-based learning and virtual patients in junior years of medical school. KSMU shall be responsible for all Kazakhstan national activities, including educational content customization, outreach activities and local healthcare system insights, dissemination and impact activities.

Zaporozhye State Medical University (ZSMU) is a self-governing, multi-profile higher educational institution of the IV-th (top) level of accreditation. The University trains Bachelors, MDs and Masters of Pharmacy for Ukraine and foreign countries, more than 10000 students in 8 faculties. ZSMU is certified in accordance with the international standard ISO 9001-2008. According to the institutional strategy, ZSMU tends to integration into the European educational space through participation in international projects and grant programs for staff and students of the University. ZSMU has been participating in a global tuberculosis research program of Fondation Mérieux (France) studying the problem of molecular-genetic identification of tuberculosis and its resistance. ZSMU supports the implementation of new ways of teaching and learning, aiming to achieve the European level of health care system. In this regard, ZSMU has already participated in 2 EC funded projects, incl. ePBLnet and TAME regarding active medical learning using virtual patients and created Medical Educational Centre (MEC) to disseminate PBL technology in Ukraine. MEC in ZSMU is the centre of enhancement, implementation and dissemination of educational technologies, incl. developing the professional skills of teaching staff as well as working in international network of educational centres. ZSMU shall be responsible for all Ukraine national activities, including educational content customization, outreach activities and local healthcare system insights, dissemination and impact activities.
