Demand for open-access and state-of-the-art medical educational content has been increasingly elevated over the last decade. Medical Learning Objects (MLOs) are usually accessible through institutional or commercial applications and websites, but are not widely available. MLO refers to a Learning Object (structured instructional material with a specified educational objective) with medical content. Best-practice networks, such as mEducator, and collaborative platforms, such as wikis, can facilitate sharing of medical educational content. Multi-type content repurposing and sharing in medical education is the object of mEducator, accommodated by a relevant ontology. Our project, Wiki(m)edu, consists of a semantic wiki for MLOs that implements mEducator ontology. It was realized using MediaWiki, and core extensions such as Semantic MediaWiki and Semantic Forms. The purpose of Wiki(m)edu is the creation of metadata describing medical educational content through a structured procedure and the use of semantic forms whose fields are appended to the mEducator ontology. Existing MLOs or the MLOs created within the forms of the wiki are tagged with semantic metadata, thus facilitating search and use through Web. Through further development Wiki(m)edu aims at constituting a useful semantic web tool towards improvement of medical education and facilitation of web end-users in search of educational content in medical objects.
